DJI Air 3S - The Best Hobby Grade Camera Drone?

DJI Air 3S - The Best Hobby Grade Camera Drone?

In July 2023 DJI Released the Air 3, a powerful dual camera drone ideal for travellers and hobbyists interested in capturing amazing photos and videos on the go. The Air 3 compared to its predecessor (Air 2S) offered some massive upgrades such as a dual camera system, O4 transmission and 48MP still photos. So, how does the Air 3S compare to the Air 3? And is it worth it for new pilots or Air 3 pilots?

How Does it Compare to the Air 3 Price Wise?

What Features Does The Air 3S Have That The Air 3 Doesn't?

The Air 3S may look very similar if not identical to the Air 3, but there are quite a few big differences separating the two drones. Firstly, the Air 3S features an improved camera, with the new 1" CMOS sensor the Air 3S can capture clearer images and delivers better low-light performance helping you capture those breathtaking shots night or day!

Besides the improved camera, the Air 3S is among DJI's first drones to feature some highly-advanced safety tech. Of course, the Air 3S is standard with Omnidirectional Obstacle Avoidance/Emergency Braking, but it also has a new addition — Forward facing LiDAR. LiDAR is a laser based system that can be used to detect objects in close proximity. Unlike traditional vision systems, LiDAR isn't normally impaired in low light conditions. With the new LiDAR system on the Air 3S, it can navigate in low light conditions with ease. Additionally, with the LiDAR and other VPS (Visual Positioning System) hardware, the Air 3S can Return To Home with no GPS, further enhancing flight safety.

Who Is The Air 3S Right For?

If you are a content creator or an individual looking to enter the semi-pro level of aerial photography/videography, the Air 3S is perfect. Compared to the Mini 4 Pro, the Air 3S has better camera specs, more advanced flight systems and overall will deliver much better image and video quality. With that being said, if you are looking to travel it's important to check local laws and check what type of licence is required where you're flying as the Air 3S is well above the 250-gram limit (721g approx) seen in most countries.

Should You Upgrade From The Air 3?

If you are flying in congested places, or are flying for hire as a professional, the Air 3S is a solid upgrade. With its improved camera and, most importantly, improved safety system, the Air 3S can enhance flight safety and thus support safer operations. On the other hand, if you are an avid enthusiast, the Air 3S still provides substantial upgrades that could help prevent crashes and offer more versatility over the Air 3.

Conclusion

The Air 3S is a substantial upgrade compared to the Air 3S, with the new LiDAR system, Non-GPS RTH and improved camera, you'll be able to push your creativity to the limit. If you're a new pilot looking to get into the hobby, the Air 3S is a great option but unlike the Mini 4 Pro it does require a licence in most countries including Canada.
